If you were to Google my name, you'd probably find (on LInkedIn) that I have an MBA, that I graduated three times, that I've held leadership and management roles and having read this, you might assume that I'm confident, accomplished and comfortable in my own skin.
But that's not the full story ...
Reading between the Lines
Spoiler Alert - Not all of my life is 'Instagramable' (but we'll come back to this).
Let's rewind slightly.
Although my teaching years have been interrupted by my having a family, needing to bring in 'a wage' (as they called it back then) and countless calamities, that you wouldn't wish upon anyone, I've been fortunate enough to have the strength and resilience to keep my head above water and to simply never quit!
(There’s even evidence that resilience plays a key role in adult learning and achievement - see this research on Resilience and Success in Mature Learners.)
Because the truth is ...
Anyone can give up, it's the simplest thing in the world.
But to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that's true strength.
And I say this to myself on repeat…
There is no way, having worked this hard, that you wont be rewarded.
You have to believe.
This time is preparing you for something amazing (as if your journey so far isn't amazing enough)!
So keep going.
I repeated that over and over;
I’d remind myself ...
NO… there’s just no way I’m going to believe that something amazing isn’t unfolding here.
I’ve worked too hard.
And when you get yourself into that mindset, it creates a sense of resilience.
And momentum ...
And resolve ...
You need that in order to keep going, when you feel disappointed or when life is beating you down.
OK, so back to my journey.
I was a teacher of English and I.T. (Information Technology), so I knew I could write, I knew I could teach and I knew I could be ahead of the game with technology. I had the mindset to succeed and my drive and ambition carried me through the ranks until I'd achieved my highest qualification yet; an MBA (Masters in Business Administration).
So there you have it. I had the business acumen to run an online business and to see it snowball into what it is today.
1) It's never too late
2) You can if you think you can
3) Just do it
4) You're never too old
What can we learn from this?
Can we weave some of these wellness principles — resilience, belief, perseverance — into our daily lives or workplaces?
Absolutely.
